Abstract

Severe trauma is the most common cause of death after early childhood predominantly due to motor vehicle accidents and sports injuries. Because of anatomical and physiological differences, paediatric trauma has unique characteristics. When dealing with childhood trauma, the extent, injury type and severity of the trauma should be considered. At first contact, life-threatening conditions and major haemorrhage should be recognised and treated. The primary survey should be structured and follow the ABCDE protocol. The goals are rapid assessment of vital signs and management of life-threatening conditions. Assessment and treatment should follow the protocol, but should run simultaneously. Established team roles and communication are of great importance.

Key words: trauma, children, structured approach.
