Abstract

Childhood obesity is an important public healthcare problem as it represents an important risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Dyslipidaemia in childhood is an independent risk factor for the development of these complications and is frequently associated with obesity. In this review, the characteristics of dyslipidaemia in childhood obesity are presented, with an emphasis on the pathophysiological mechanisms involved. Contemporary views on the management of dyslipidaemia in obese children are discussed.

Key words: childhood obesity, dyslipidaemia, lipoprotein, insulin resistance, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, cardiovascular disease.
